What Tae Kwon Do Means to Me

Hey martial artist readers: was there a written portion to your black belt test?

There is to ours. We have a several-page-long test on terminology, meaning of forms, flags, TKD. And we have to write a 2-page essay on What Tae Kwon Do Means to Me.

I enjoyed writing the essay. If you want to read it, I've posted it here.

We've never had a written test (although there has been talk of one in the near future), but yes, for my 1st dan I wrote an essay on what TKD means to me. 2nd dan essay was the history of tkd (I was too young to really understand it, so I just took my sister's essay and summarized it in my own words - oops!). 3rd dan essay I was on my own, but I was 15 so I was old enough to take in all the information. This essay was on the history of forms, which was really interesting. I'm anxious to get my topic for my 4th dan - I hope it will be fun to write. Take care and happy birthday!

I liked your essay, TKD Mom -- You could have just printed out your blog entries for the past 2 years however!
When I tested for my first dan black belt, we were orally tested on terminology, forms, etc. For my second dan test (April 21st), we will have to submit an essay.
